Common Redpoll

Common Redpoll

February 18, 2013, Saint Louis County, Minnesota

Notes: This male Common Redpoll is a bit unusual in that it appears to have unstreaked undertail coverts, a well-known field mark for Hoary Redpoll. Nevertheless, the dark upperparts, heavy and dark streaking on the flanks, extensive red "poll" on the forehead, deep and extensive red on the breast, and large bill all add up to indicate that this is no Hoary.
